Privacy Policy

Overview
Engram is a macOS application built by Engram Computer ("we", "us", "our"). We take your privacy seriously. Engram is designed as a local-first application — your recordings, screenshots, clipboard history, and all associated data stay on your machine.
Data We Collect
Data stored locally on your device
All of the following data is created and stored exclusively on your Mac. We do not have access to it.
- Screen recordings — Video and audio files captured during recording sessions.
- Screenshots — Image files from screen captures.
- Clipboard history — Text and image content you copy.
- Recording intelligence — Accessibility tree snapshots, OCR text, focus events, cursor tracking, transcriptions, chapters, and summaries generated during recordings.
- Editor projects — Timeline edits, zoom regions, canvas settings, and export configurations.
Data we may collect
- Purchases — If you purchase Engram through the Mac App Store, Apple handles all payment processing. We do not receive or store your payment details. We may receive anonymized purchase confirmation data from Apple.
- Crash reports — If you opt in, anonymized crash reports may be sent to help us improve the app. These contain no screen content, recordings, or personal data.
AI Processing
Engram uses on-device AI models (such as WhisperKit for transcription and Apple Vision for OCR) to process your recordings. This processing happens entirely on your Mac. No recording data, transcripts, or screen content is sent to external AI services.
When you connect Engram to an AI agent via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the agent runs locally on your machine and communicates with Engram through a local Unix socket. The data shared with the agent depends on the agent's configuration and is controlled by you.
macOS Permissions
Engram requests the following system permissions:
- Screen Recording — Required to capture your screen during recordings.
- Accessibility — Used to read the accessibility tree for context capture during recordings (app names, window titles, UI elements).
- Microphone — Optional. Used to capture audio during recordings when you enable it.
These permissions are managed through macOS System Settings. You can revoke them at any time.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data or recording content with third parties. Your recordings and captured data remain on your device unless you explicitly export or share them yourself.
Data Retention & Deletion
All local data is under your control. You can delete individual recordings, screenshots, or your entire Engram data directory at any time. Uninstalling the app removes the application but you may need to manually delete the data stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Engram.
Children's Privacy
Engram is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
